My favorite version of Hamlet was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Showing the funeral of Hamlet's father was very effective. It showed how much his wife cared about him. The eye contact between Hamlet's mother and uncle suggest a future relationship they will share. Another reason I liked this version was because they showed the army in the beginning to show a war coming and the army being prepared. The language of this version of Hamlet was almost the same as the play and was very effective when watching it. In the original play Hamlet's father does not have a funeral. The play opens with the ghost appearing. Having the funeral in the beginning showed how much Hamlet's father was honered in the country. In my opinion Hamlet was portrayed most realistically. You could see the pain he had from the loss of his father and the disconnect he shared with his mother. I would change the ghost appearing so late. I felt as though the ghost should have appeared earlier in the film to show that the king still lives and haunts the kingdom. Hamlet, directed by Zeffirelli portrayed all of the characters well and although different from the play was the most interesting out of the three films.
I think the second was better, because Zeffirelli did not follow the book he kind of lead it astray with his movie.
ReplyDeleteI also think the second was better, because this version does not really give you a insight on what happened in the play
ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of what you said. I thought the character of Hamlet was right on the money and the funeral was extremely effective. I just feel like the Ken Branagh version gives a better idea of the actual play .
ReplyDeleteI also liked the second version better because it was in detail with everything that happened in the book. The funeral scene in the Zeffirelli version I didn't get because he it deosn't follow the book at all.
ReplyDeleteBrit i thought it was alright but your right they played the part of hamlet and the death really well but i didnt really get into it. i think the second one was more realistic and more powerfull and it was easier to follow along with in the book.
ReplyDeleteBrittany, I also like Franko Zeffirelli's version but I felt he skipped some parts in the movie and it got a little confusing. Unlike Franko's version, Ken branagh's version goes hand and hand, word for work with the book and it is easier to comprehend.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Look at this awesome little discussion you guys are having!! I think all three versions have something great to offer. Although K. Branagh's is my favorite, I like the setting in Zefirelli's and I like Ethan Hawk in Almereyda's version.
ReplyDeleteBrittney, I agree with everything you said about why Zefirelli's version was your favorite. But I still enjoyed Branagh's version the most because, it was exactly the same as the book. For instance, we read Act I, we're watching Act II. We can decide to go back to the book for Act III, I don't think anyone would be confused.
ReplyDeleteBrittney, I can see why you like the first version because it gives a background to the play ,Hamlet. When reading the play you are indirectly told that the King of Denmark is dead and Denmark is getting ready for battle. But when watching it, the only way the director can tell you all this information is to show you. So I felt Zefirelli made a good attempt of doing that. I felt this version was made for the people who didn't read the play Hamlet and decided to just watch the movie. Although K. Branagh's version of Hamlet still remains as my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI liked the Franco Zefirelli version but I liked the Kenneth Banagh version better because the setting and dialogue were more from the play then just looking like the actor is winging it
ReplyDeletei still say that ken banagh's version of Hamlet is better because he followed the play.
